Driving innovation
The world is continuously changing. This means that we’re always on the lookout for talented people from a diverse range of backgrounds to help us see things through fresh eyes and drive forward innovation at the Met Office.
Our apprentices play a vital role in helping us deliver world-changing work. We currently have apprentices in various roles across the organisation including Technology, Human Resources, Engineering, Legal Services, Project Management and Finance. These range from Level 2 to Level 6 programmes. From school and college leavers to people returning to work or looking to retrain. Whatever stage of life you’re at, an apprenticeship at the Met Office could be what you’re looking for.
The value of apprenticeships
Our apprenticeships are a structured learning and industry experience programme that will enable you to do meaningful, valuable work as you study for a relevant, recognised qualification. All while earning a wage. As well as leading to a nationally recognised qualification, many of our apprenticeships also offer professional accreditation and opportunities for further qualifications.
Level 2 – Intermediate (GCSE)
Level 3 – Advanced (A-Level)
Levels 4 and 5 – Higher (Foundation Degree)
Levels 6 and 7 – Degree (Bachelor or Master Degree)
Some of our recent programmes
We currently have apprentices in various professions across the organisation including Technology, Human Resources, Engineering, Legal Services, Project Management and Finance. These range from Level 2 to Level 6 programmes and offer a fantastic chance to work whilst learning and gaining a qualification. Some examples of the programmes we have offered recently include:
Level 4 Project Management
A two-year programme working alongside project and programme management professionals. Allowing you to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of project management whilst contributing to the Met Office's aims. Gaining a Level 4 Certificate in Project Management, as well as an IPMA Level D or APM Project Management Qualification.
Level 4 Digital
A 15 to 18-month programme studying the fundamentals of software engineering, data analysis or networking, whilst developing the personal skills that will prepare you to thrive in a cutting-edge IT organisation. Gaining a permanent position upon successful completion in an entry-level role within the profession.
Level 3 Paralegal
A two-year programme with our in-house legal team covering contractual work, licensing of our intellectual property, regulatory work and research on specific topics. Gaining a Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).
Level 2 and 3 Engineering
A programme of up to three years in total working alongside our Engineering team supporting the building, installation and maintenance of environmental monitoring systems. Gaining a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship leading to Technical Support Technician, NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent).

Aaron Bartlett
Engineer (previously Engineering Apprentice)
I’ve had the opportunity to work on some fantastic projects that have a real purpose. I helped with the complete upgrade of the UK land-based automatic weather stations, which gives me a sense of pride when I watch the weather forecasts on TV now. When they list where rainfall, temperature or wind speeds have been recorded, often I can say “I’ve been there” or “I upgraded that weather site.”
Ellie Downton
Project Manager (previously Project Management Apprentice)
I arrived in 2021 as a project management apprentice and the Met Office was my first employer when I finished university. I worked in the Defence Capability Programme learning the profession first-hand whilst working towards my project management qualification. After I finished in September 2023, I was promoted to a permanent level one project manager position. I now work on a huge range of projects such as Joint Agency Modelling, Change Readiness, Public Weather Service, and Financial Efficiencies.

Digital Accessibility Apprentice
From the day I arrived, I knew I would be able to bring my whole self to work. The support I’ve been given has enabled me to take back control of my life and begin building a career for myself. My recent involvement in our first-ever Empathy Lab allowed me to share my understanding of the importance of digital accessibility, give something back to the Met Office and make a difference.
