Communications and Engagement

From promoting the Met Office’s far-reaching work and services to establishing trust in our forecasts and protecting our reputation. From talking to the Olympics organisers to the general public and top scientists. Our Communications team spreads the word about our world-changing work to deliver on our purpose and help people, businesses and governments make better decisions to stay safe and thrive. From designers, writers, campaign planners, web communications specialists, press officers and strategic communicators, there are so many opportunities in our Communications team. And we’ll look after your world of development with professional qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing or Public Relations, skills development and opportunities to move around the business.

Corporate Governance

From refreshing corporate strategy and establishing plans for the next five years, to horizon scanning and assessing environments that could impact on us over the next ten years. We balance internal business understanding with commercial expertise to achieve our objectives and deliver on our purpose. Working across teams and with the Chief Financial Officer to minimise risks and achieve our vision to be recognised as global leaders in weather and climate science, and to keep the Met Office fit for the future. Finance

From carefully reviewing organisational processes and expertly overseeing our investments, to effectively managing customer accounts and offering financial analysis which supports decision-making. Efficient finances are essential to delivering world-changing work. Our finance team is key to helping us reach our vision to be recognised as the best weather and climate service in the world. And we’ll support your world of development with Professional Skills Frameworks, management programmes and ongoing training. There is scope to move around and experience different career paths here. We offer a structured development package focused on gaining professional qualifications such as AAT through to CCAB – CIMA, ICAEW, ACCA, and we will support you with coursework and study leave.

HR and People Development

To do world-changing work we need world-class people. From attracting and retaining experts to the organisation to championing people’s development and helping them be the best they can be. The role of our People Services department is crucial to ensuring that we are a great place to work, for everyone. From looking after the diverse needs of 2,000 people to attracting top talent, the work of our People Services team is ever-evolving and fascinating. We’ll look after your world of development with support with qualifications and further learning. We’ll encourage you to work towards your CIPD or reward-related qualifications and there are plenty of opportunities to move around the organisation.

Internal Audit

From checking and reviewing processes to challenging and improving them. Our Internal Audit experts add value to all departments by evaluating how things are done and considering how they can be done better. With an interesting portfolio of work that is unique to the Met Office and the chance to work closely with the Risk Management team to manage risks effectively and efficiently. The internal audit team works across the Met Office. You'll have development opportunities with professional qualifications, secondments and practical exposure to different areas of the organisation.

Legal

From assisting legal sales and managing contractual relationships to freedom of information and intellectual property rights, from litigation to employment-related law. Helping people stay safe and thrive makes for an eclectic mix of world-changing legal work. From regulation compliance to external contractual management and contractual negotiations, we seek and develop a variety of key skills in all our legal professionals. Whatever your area of expertise, you’ll find exciting challenges and a wide-ranging scope of work with real-world impact. And we’ll look after your world of development with continuous learning, legal professional skills frameworks, in-house training and support with relevant courses, degrees and qualifications.

Library and Archive

From its beginnings in the 1850s as the library of the Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade, to being granted custodianship of the UK’s public weather records in 1914. From historians and journalists wanting to know what the weather was like on a certain date, to members of the public who are simply interested in the weather. Working in this area, you’ll be a guardian of our world-leading collection of meteorological information. And we’ll look after your world of development with our Professional Skills framework by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals and the Society of Archivists, with skills including, user education, resource management, information needs analysis and specialist IT management and development.

Commercial

From working with international suppliers to source our world-leading observation equipment, to managing procurement for our portfolio of properties or our one-of-a-kind supercomputer. From increasing revenue streams and controlling costs, to mitigating risks and managing contracts. World-changing work is made possible by efficient and effective procurement. We have the structure of a government institution with the opportunities of a world-leading organisation. And we’ll support your world of development with experience in different areas of procurement, secondments and training. The Met Office is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supplying (CIPS) and we support our people to become fully CIPS-qualified. Our Professional Skills Framework derives from CIPS and includes regulation compliance, contractual negotiation and other procurement techniques.

Properties and Facilities Management

World-changing work requires world leading properties, facilities and equipment. From weather radar stations and observation sites to satellite offices and our purpose-built Operations Centre in Exeter. If we’re to maintain and improve our operational capacity, it’s important that our property and assets over 500 sites across the UK are managed effectively, a huge and vital task for our dedicated team. From maintaining sites and coordinating planned and reactive maintenance tasks, to mechanical, electrical, plumbing or surveying assistance or effectively responding to emergency issues. Our team makes sure that the diverse portfolio of properties is inspected, well looked after, compliant, safe and continues to support the requirements of the Met Office. We’re not just talking about keeping properties tidy and ticking over, with such a diverse, ever-expanding portfolio of properties all over the UK, the work is wide-ranging and vital to the world-changing work we do here.
