We want the Met Office to always be a great place to work and our employee networks are critical to helping us achieve this. Here people can come together to share experiences, offer support and work with senior leaders and colleagues to create positive change. Any employee can become an ally to any of the networks, which currently have over 400 members.
Accessibility and Disability Network
Working across the organisation to improve all aspects of working life for staff with disabilities.
ADHD Network
A peer-support community for individuals with ADHD, providing a platform for sharing work-related challenges and fostering understanding and support within the Met Office.
Autism Network
A peer-support network for autistic-identifying staff, offering a safe space for discussion of autism-related challenges, as well as advocating for improved understanding and support across the Met Office.
Carer Support Network
Looking at the issues that impact carers within the workplace. Subjects such as preparation, policy and guidance, practical and peer support.
Dyslexia and Dyspraxia Network
Provides a safe space and peer support for anyone with specific learning differences, and raises awareness of the strengths and challenges these differences bring to individuals across the Met Office.
EM-Power Network
A forum for ethnically diverse colleagues across the Met Office to discuss, challenge and act where necessary to promote race equality and diversity.
Internationals in the UK Network
Promoting, supporting and celebrating the international character of the Met Office. Promoting the ED&I of international staff.
LGBTQ+ Network
This network brings together the views of LGBTQ+ colleagues to share their experiences and identify challenges being faced by the community. So we can support each other and work with colleagues across the Met Office to create an inclusive workplace for LGBTQ+.
Menopause Network
Female staff of all ages come together to offer insight, guidance and support around the various stages of perimenopause and menopause.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Network
Raising awareness of the importance of mental health and wellbeing at work and in daily life.
Religion and Philosophical Belief Network
Bringing together multiple faiths and beliefs, and providing a place for all to meet and share our diversity. Understanding and supporting each other’s faiths and traditions.
Shift Workers Network
Supporting colleagues across the organisaton to recognise how shift work can impact on health, safety and wellbeing.
Women in Climate Network
A joint staff-led University of Exeter and Met Office initiative supporting women in climate science and promoting diversity and hosting skills-based sessions to help people achieve success in their careers.
Women’s Network
A community for conversation, support and change, championing women and advocating for change. The network advocates for policies that help women thrive at the Met Office and we champion access to career advancement and development.
Focused on your wellbeing
Our focus on wellbeing has been evolving since the 1970s and today our Wellbeing Strategy sets out our vision, priorities and provision to staff, informed by the NHS five ways to wellbeing model. We offer access to a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme for early support and guidance with wellbeing difficulties (mental, physical and social) and we are a signatory member to the Mindful Employer charter for workplace mental health. These are underpinned by regular training courses for staff and managers alongside communication features and personal stories. We use data to monitor pressure points and stress in the organisation and support and encourage our staff-led network to engage and promote wellbeing activity at a team level, creating a feedback loop in the process.
Thriving at work
We all have unique circumstances, and we’re passionate about providing the specific support people need to thrive. To ensure we are a great place to work for everyone, we recognise that this is a collective effort from the board to the teams on the ground. Every Met Office colleague is provided with the option to use the Met Office Workplace Adjustments Passport. The passport helps to start conversations about workplace adjustments and travels with them throughout their career, as we recognise that we all may need workplace adjustments at some point in our working lives.
Prospect Union
When you start working for the Met Office, you'll be invited to join our trade union, Prospect. Prospect supports and represents thousands of members across a wide range of roles and sectors - but in particular scientists, engineers, tech experts and other specialist roles. The union is focused on ensuring that everyone operates in a safe, supportive workplace. Offering career advice and support should something go wrong. Across the organisation, we have a wide range of enthusiastic amateur and professional ambassadors who are passionate about engaging with groups of all ages and sizes. Our ambassador outreach work provides education and inspiration on a wide range of topics such as meteorology, cutting-edge technology and world-leading science. This programme is integral to the Met Office's purpose as we positively engage with communities so that they are aware, understand and act.
